Factoid for you!  Since the summer of 2016 to January 2017 our volunteer army in Devon have been providing whole blood for the purposes of transfusion to the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.  Last month, Air Ambulance Co-Ordinator Dave 'Cookie' Cook was proud to install a new team of local volunteers in Dorchester to manage the service for us.

On looking at how much work we have been doing since we began we were astonished to work out we've clocked up a staggering 77,000 miles running the service out of Honiton. Putting that into perspective it equates to more than three times the circumference of the planet!  Pole to pole around the world is 24,812 miles, and all of it has been done completely free of charge.

Lives have been saved as a result, and full credit for what was a four hour round trip goes to Dave and his team which included Mr John Patrick, Miss Caroline Retter, Mr Maurice 'Mo' Ayling, Mr Rodney Strawbridge, supported by back up drivers Mr Philip Paver and Mr John Conway.  Blood stocks on board the aircraft are supplied and rotated every 48hrs with an immediate replenishment if the critical care teams on board the aircraft need to use the blood on a patient.

In an effort to run a more effective service we have installed a new team of volunteers in Dorchester.  We would therefore like to extend a great big Devon Freewheelers family welcome to Mr Allan Legg, Mr Colin Chapman, Mr Justin Oakley, Mr Martin Warden, Mr Nic Marsden and Mrs Tricia Dyer.  The Dorset team will still enjoy the benefits of being backed up by the original crew for some time to come.

A special thank you to the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service who have offered our Air Ambulance Response Car free parking at the Dorchester Fire Station, giving all of our new volunteers easy and instant access to the vehicle which has been sponsored by the Henry Surtess Foundation.  Our thanks also go to local department store Goulds of Dorchester who's staff chose us as their charity of choice last year to support our fuel costs and raised over £3,000.

If you would like to help us fundraise to keep this vital service running, please get in touch!  We'd love to hear from you and we'll support you as much as necessary in your fundraising events.
