We are delighted that we have been chosen to be Exeter's Lord Mayors charity for her period in office following her inauguration.

The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor Councillor Cynthia Thompson is the new Lord Mayor of Exeter. She will use her term in office to raise money for the Devon Freewheelers.

Cllr Thompson told the Exeter Citizen: “Devon Freewheelers are a team of 50 volunteer emergency vehicle drivers who are dedicated to providing a service supporting the NHS in delivering essential blood, samples, medication and donor breast milk to hospitals throughout Devon. I can’t think of a better charity to support during my year as Lord Mayor of Exeter.”

Cllr Thompson was born and grew up in St. Thomas, and attended local schools. She gained a Licentiateship from Trinity College of Music, London, where she studied piano for three years under the Czechoslovakian concert pianist Madame Eva Bernathova and later gained a diploma in music in the multiple disciplines of music theory, including composition.

Married to David, they have three grown up children, five grandchildren and another on the way! Having moved around the country through her husband’s work, she has worked as a peripatetic music teacher in various schools and colleges.

First elected to the City Council in the Pinhoe ward in 2008, she enjoys making patchwork items from recycled materials and improvising at the piano.

Joining her as Deputy Lord Mayor is Cllr Peter Holland. Born in London, Cllr Holland moved to Devon in 1968. He was first elected onto the City Council in 2014 and represents the Pennsylvania ward.

The Lord Mayor is elected each year from the 39 city councillors, and is supported by a Deputy Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor is non political during their year of office. The Deputy Lord Mayor remains politically active.

The Lord Mayor and their Deputy attend more than 600 functions and civic events during the year. These events:

  • promote the city through business and community activities
  • support local charities and community organisations
  • raise funds for their own chosen charity

The Lord Mayor will also host foreign visitors, including businessmen and dignitaries and guests from our twin cities, promoting foreign investment and business links.
