YER TIZ 2015

The Yer Tiz Motorcycle Rally is the brainchild of Rich Long and was set up in 2010 for the first event to run in 2011. The aim was to make new friends, catch up with old ones, and have a great time with any profits made being donated to biker related organisations. In total, more than £10,000 has been raised for the groups.

Rich approached the North Tawton Rugby Club, located between Crediton and Okehampton, as the likely venue. The location has good access from Exeter and Cornwall via the A30. The rugby club agreed and their grounds, clubhouse, bar and kitchen were used throughout the weekend. The bar was drunk dry on the first night!

The rally has gone from strength to strength and has raised thousands of pounds for local causes. Now in its 5th year Devon Freewheelers are the chosen charity for the event as well as a related international cause ‘Motorcycle Outreach’ which is a UK based charity for oversees support, using M/C’s to reach those places in remote areas that 4 wheels would have problems with providing various forms of health care.

The event was being set up on Friday with a few early comers to get the best tent pitches and one of our on call riders (Peter Harvey) paid the site a visit. By mid-day on Saturday the Rugby pitch was transformed into a rather spectacular camping site with, flat well drained manicured pitch turf that any camp site would envy. Two of our Freewheeler volunteer on call riders, Dan Hart who was covering the north of the county and Dave Cook who is also one of our First responders from the east.

Lots of extra bikers turned up for the day to the free bike show, which had some deliciously tasty and some less than tasteful exhibits of all shapes and sizes. The bikes were judged in categories and the one ‘Vespa scooter’ entered had little opposition and therefore won 1st 2nd and third prize.

The organisers have a good relationship with the Rugby club and local community, who both tolerate the invasion of motorcycles to their quiet rural village for a weekend each year, but also benefit from the extra business. The atmosphere at the rally was very relaxed and good humoured and our riders talked too many of the bikers to swap stories. Dan gave a small presentation in the marquee where live bands would feature throughout the weekend, and although the PA system was a little under strength and only those at the front got a full run down, luckily Dave was at the rear interpreting the muffled speech to those out of earshot.

DFW were made very welcome and we would like to thank the organisers and staff/marshals for their support and friendship.
