On the 5th / 6th March STARTREK will celebrate its 24th anniversary with another overnight orienteering walk across Exmoor. The walk is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Ilfracombe and has raised over £750,000 for North Devon Hospice, Childrens Hospice South West and other local charities.
This year Devon Freewheelers will also be a major beneficiary. Devon Freewheelers are a team of 50 volunteer Emergency Vehicle drivers who are dedicated to providing a weekday out of hours service (17.00 – 06.00) and 24/7 weekend service supporting the NHS in delivering essential Blood, Samples, Medication and Donor Breast Milk to hospitals throughout Devon.
Ann Doody who is Chairman of the organising committee advises “we would like to be in a position to able to donate sufficient funds to Devon Freewheelers to enable them to buy a second hand blood bike (ex police) to be based in the North Devon Area where their profile is perhaps not as high as in other parts of Devon, but is growing”.
This year’s the walk will be around 16 miles in length and will start from and finish at a brand new base camp. The course and clues have been set and written up and will be painstakingly tested under night time conditions. As always the organisers priority is to ensure walkers safety whilst still providing the challenge which has encouraged thousands of walkers to take part.
Teams will also have the option of doing the half trek which is eight miles in length. This will be the 3rd year the half trek has been offered and since its introduction 25 teams have undertaken the half trek with a number of the teams progressing to the full trek the following year.
Ann also advises “over the years STARTREK has received increasing support from businesses and organisations with a number entering multiple teams. Once again we will be presenting the STARTREK CHALLENGE CORPORATE TROPHY to the business or organisation raising the most sponsorship and asking them to nominate a charity to receive £500 of the sponsorship raised.”
Whilst many teams have already registered to take part in this years walk, the organisers need more entries from teams comprising of a minimum of four and a maximum of six walkers if the level of funds raised in previous years is to be achieved.
