Grand Canyon trek 2016

A Honiton mum of two, Sharon Grove, has just signed up for her next charity trek. Sharon will be trekking through the Grand Canyon in October 2016 to raise money for the Devon Freewheelers.

This will be the fourth trek Sharon has done. Previous Treks include Macchu Pichu – Peru, Great Wall of China and Masai Valley in Tanzania. To date she has raised around £7,500 for Devon Air Ambulance and the Children's Hospice South West, and hopes to raise £4,000 for the Devon Freewheelers based in Honiton.

Sharon says “My first trek was back in 2008. After having my two girls, Lauren and Amy, I had lost 5 stone with Slimming World in Honiton and just felt I wanted to do something different, something challenging – yet raising money for charity too. I had much more energy than before the weight loss and felt I now had the confidence to do it”.

“I saw an advert for a trek in a Slimming World magazine which got me thinking, but I wanted to find a trek that enabled me to raise money for local charities, which I did online. Since that first trek there’s no stopping me and even though I have only recently returned from Tanzania, have already signed up for the next one. When the trekking gets tough I know I can do it as I've raised the money for the charity”.

“This time round I wanted to keep my charity really local which is why I have chosen the Freewheelers here in Honiton as I also know the story behind why this was started by Daniel Lavery the Founder. I am an active volunteer of the Freewheelers team and 2015 is about raising their awareness.

This is my way of giving back to a worthy cause. Devon Freewheelers are a team of volunteer Emergency Vehicle drivers who are dedicated to providing a weekday out of hours service and 24/7 weekend service supporting the NHS in delivering essential Blood, Samples, Medication and Donor Breast Milk to hospitals throughout Devon.

Sharon would like to thank three local businesses who have agreed to sponsor the charity trek – Richard Spiller at Red Homes Estate Agents, Lin Sansom at House of Hair and Jon Capon at Otter Windows.
